"Fashion means so many things, and it can be ugly, beautiful, grotesque, emotional, physical. Hard and soft, masculine and feminine - this is what I like to bring to the table when creating." -- Simone Rocha
Simone Rocha was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1986. Her time as a student at Central Saint Martins College in London trained her to become a fashion designer. Rocha made her debut at London Fashion Week in September of the following year.
Simone designs around the seasonal changes, collaborating on printing limited edition books and showcasing the work of other artists. In her 2021 Fall collection, she looks at notions of hard-edge and softness by turning her magnifying glass on the rose. According to numerous articles, the sculptures of Louise Bourgeois and the choreography of Pina Bausch are her primary design influences.
Audiences will find “Rocha's inspirations in the "uniformity and naivety" of school days, and the simple garden rose, namely the tension between the flower's sharp thorns and delicate petals. In this collection, she uses "the three graces": satin, leather, and tulle."

(element three) PLAY DRESS UP with what's on hand. Every person is a contradiction. How can you make your clothing look contradictory? Find images of roses online and look at them very closely. What is their contrast? If you can look at one under a magnifying glass in person -- even better.
Start with your shoes. Pick one shoe with a soft look and one shoe with a more brutal, practical look. Decorate them both with ribbons or wire or anything to create contrast. Now work your way up. Try a pair of trousers or a skirt and dress them with their opposite look. Do the same with a shirt or blouse. How many contrasts can you create? Permit yourself to be at your softest and most prickly at the same time. Please take a photo of yourself and send it to a friend or send it to me. I would love to see what you have created! Try always to share your art.
Finished? Congratulations. Well done, artist!
If you seek perfection, you will never reach completion.
