“To work as one, abide, provide
Mercy, hope, humility
These are the words we whisper in our sleep” -- Patti Smith
Patti Smith arrived in NYC in 1967. She became involved in the artists' scene in midtown Manhattan, composing poems and living with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. Her performance-driven poetry readings quickly took on a musical component, and she began frequently working with musician and critic Lenny Kaye in 1971. By 1973, they'd formed a band and made a name for themselves in the city's club scene. Smith's hypnotic charm, chantlike yet husky and fascinating vocal farrago, prophetic phrases, and simple yet smart rock music style won her international cult status.
