AT HOME ART DATE | watch review collage
I would like to show the world today as an ant sees it and tomorrow as the moon sees it.
-- Hannah Höch
My art belongs to Dada.
-- the character of Tristan Tzara in Tom Stoppard’s Travesties
Höch began her training in 1912 at the School of Applied Arts in Berlin-Charlottenburg. Höch worked part-time at Ullstein Verlag, a Berlin magazine-publishing house for which she wrote articles and designed patterns for "women's" handicrafts. Her position gave her access to an abundant supply of images and text that she could use in her work. In 1918 she was introduced to the Berlin Dada circle, a group of artists that included George Grosz, Wieland Herzfelde, and John Heartfield. Höch was the only woman in the Berlin Dada collective, stuck in what everybody seemed to believe was a male centric artistic culture.
This AT HOME ART DATE is a chance for you to throw caution to the wind and play.
(element one) WATCH this excellent short film on Dadaism here.
(element two) REVIEW this beautifully curated summary of Höch’s work here.
(element three) COLLAGE cut-out images from magazines and books into a new visual story that is both absurd and surreal. Avoid overthinking and surprise yourself. Go wild and throw the cut images on the floor and let gravity determine the look of your collage.
How does it feel to have the freedom to make a new, wild story out of old images?
If you seek perfection, you will never reach completion.
