Björk + Your Burst of Noise Project

AT HOME ART DATE | watch listen record

When I write a song, I see a tunnel, and then the chorus is an open space, or the bassline is doing this shape. I see songs as a more of a geometric, spacial experience. -- Björk

Björk is a singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, and DJ from Iceland. Prior to her solo career, she rose to worldwide prominence as the lead vocalist of the alternative rock band the Sugarcubes. Björk was named one of the world's 100 most influential people by Time magazine.

(element one) WATCH this interesting compilation of interviews with Björk here.

(element two) LISTEN to the simplicity of Björk’s unique lyrics in Unravel here and follow along:

While you are away

My heart comes undone

Slowly unravels

In a ball of yarn

The devil collects it

With a grin

Our love

In a ball of yarn

He'll never return it

So when you come back

We'll have to make new love

(element three) RECORD your unique burst of sound. First, write simple lyrics for a song using the first word of each line of Björk’s song above. Then find any instrumental music online. Have some pots and pans and kitchen utensils handy. Play the online music and improvise your lyrics and the noise you make with your kitchen instruments. Do it a couple of times. Record yourself using the voice memo option on your smartphone.

How does it feel to create a song that defies the conventional structure of popular music?

If you resist doing this exercise, do it anyway.
